History

"The moving finger writes and having writ moves on not all you piety nor with shall lure it back to cancel half a line nor all your tears wash out a word of it"Lodge Star of the South No.101 was inaugurated on the 15th of December 1921 under a provisional warrant granted by the Grand Lodge of Scotland. The lodge was registered as No. 1290 on the rolls of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. The regular charter dated the 4th May 1922 was received later and in an emergent meeting held on 14th February 1923 the lodge was duly consecrated by R. W. Bro. A. N. Nisi. G.S.D., Grand Secretary, All Scottish Freemasonry in India, as the Grand Lodge was then designated. This Lodge took the momentous and unanimous decision to join the Grand Lodge of India at its regular meeting held on 5th May 1961. Thus it became a Foundation member of the Grand Lodge of India and this change was adopted by a resolution passed on 5th January 1962.The charter granted by the Grand Lodge of Scotland was returned on October 1961 and the November meeting was held without a charter under a letter of authority issued by the Grand Lodge of Scotland. It was a happy day when on 31st December 1961 W. Bro. B. S. Dodsankarappa S. G. Deacon and W. Bro. P. L Venkata Rao, G Marshal were received and greeted, when W. Bro. B. S. Dodsankarappa presented the charter issued by the M. W. the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of India to the W. Master, W. Bro, S. P Nanjunda Mudaliar, the first W. Master under the Indian Constitution, and the last under the Scottish constitution. The W. Master was decorated with the Foundation Lodge Jewel by W. Bro. B. S. Dodsankarappa. The new banner under the Grand Lodge of India was put up for the first time on 5th July 1963.The Lodge celebrated the Platinum Jubilee on 15th October 1997 in the august presence of M. W. The Grand M. W. Bro. K. L. Reddy and R. W. the Regional Grand Master R. W. Bro K. R. Rajasekaran Nair.We are deeply beholden to our past masters and the various office bearers who have labored hard to enable the Lodge to the present its proud record on this day.A mason, it was said in 1734-74
"is a man of Benevolence and charity, not sitting down contended, while his fellow creatures, but much more his brethren, are in want, When it is in his power (without Prejudicing himself or family), to relieve them"

Freemasonry

INTRODUCTION
Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest secular fraternal societies. Its members are joined together by shared ideals of both a moral and metaphysical nature, and by a common belief in a Supreme Being. The following information is intended to explain Freemasonry as it is practiced under the Grand Lodge of India (GLI), which administers Lodges of Freemasons in India. Freemasonry is a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values. Its members are taught its precepts by a series of ritual dramas, which follow ancient forms, and use stonemasons' customs and tools as allegorical guides.
IS FREEMASONRY A RELIGION?
No, Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for religion. You can follow your own religion and it expects you to continue to follow their own faith. It does not allow religion to be discussed at its meeting. A mason is encouraged to do his duty first to his God (by whatever name he is known) through his faith and religious practice; and then, without detriment to his family and those dependent on him, to his neighbor through charity and service. None of these ideas is exclusively Masonic, but all should be universally acceptable. Freemasons are expected to follow them
WHAT ARE THE PRINCIPLES OF FREEMASONRY?
The three great principles of freemasons are:
- Brotherly Love - a true mason will show respect, kindness and understanding of fellow beings.
- Relief - Masons practice charity and to care, not only for their own brother, but also for the society in general.
- Truth - Masons endeavour for truth, aiming for high moral standards and by achieving them in their own lives.
SECRECY
Freemasonry is not a secret society, since all members are free to acknowledge their membership and will do so in response to enquiries for respectable reasons. Its constitutions and rules are available to the public. There is no secret about any of its aims and principles. Like many other societies, it regards some of its internal affairs as private matters for its members.
CHARITY
The three Great Principles by which we stand are Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. Freemasons are taught to practice charity and to care, not only for their own, but also for the community as a whole, both by charitable giving, and by voluntary efforts and works as individuals. From its earliest days, Freemasonry has been concerned with the care of orphans, the sick and the aged. This work continues today. In addition, large sums are given to national and local charities. Masonic charity is exercised at every level, individual Lodges make gifts and give aid to their own communities.
The members substantially contribute to the Grand Master's Rupee club, setting aside Rs. 1.00 every day of the year and help build a large corpus which will be available for immediate disbursement to the distressed in times of calamities. We assist in preserving our heritage by contributing generously to the Masonic Foundation and help in maintaining and preserving the Freemason's Hall and Temples of the region."Associate yourself with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for its better to be alone than in bad company"
-George Washington
